Wound Care Looking Towards Nature.
MESQUITE, Texas (September 19, 2008)--Brady Medical, a global contract
manufacturer is utilizing Alginate Dressings comprised of seaweed fibers for use in wound
care.
Alginate is made of soft non-woven fibers derived from seaweed. These non-woven
fibers are formed into pads which are used in island dressings. Alginates are known to have healing
and haemostatic properties.
The dry dressing is lightweight and able to absorb large amounts of wound
exudate. When wet, the alginate forms a gel like covering over wounds or burns. Since the dressing
does not adhere to the wound, removal of the dressings is easy and pain free.
"Alginate dressings provide a moist, warm environment which promotes faster
healing", said Mike Stewart, Business Development Manager for Brady Medical. "In addition the
Alginate forms a gel when absorbing exudate and conforms to the wound bed, providing a cushioning
effect over the wound site".
The fibres of the alginate dressing are durable both wet and dry. Alginate
promotes blood clotting, making wounds heal twice as fast as other products.
This type of dressing does not physically inhibit wound contraction as would
gauze.
